MY PRIORITIES

Rooted In Lansing. Committed To Our Students

SafeR Schools

Students need to feel physically, emotionally, and mentally safe so they can show up ready to learn. I will prioritize strong mental health support and safe learning environments where every student feels valued.

  • Coordinate with mental health providers, community organizers, city departments to holistically support our students.

  • Support restorative approaches and practices when it comes to discipline to keep our students connected to our schools while reinforcing expectations.

  • Ensure that educators and staff members are safe and that the district provides resources for intervention.

  • Prioritize early intervention by providing families with resources to support their students at home and in the community.

QUALITY EDUCATION

Great schools start with great educators. I will work to support and retain teachers, invest in classrooms, and ensure that every student receives a high-quality education.

  • Develop a balanced budget that supports our district goals, prioritizing the needs of our educators, and set our students up for success.

  • Establish clear goals that support our district’s mission and hold our superintendent and district administrators accountable.

  • Create policies that support and empower our educators and staff, not micromanaging them.

  • Advocate to policymakers and community partners to ensure that our public schools are at the forefront of their priorities.

PREPARING STUDENTS

Our schools should prepare every student for success after graduation. I will work to build partnerships that create pathways to college, skilled trades, and good-paying careers.

  • Create new and expand current post-secondary pathways for our students by utilizing local trade unions and higher education institutions across our community.

  • Establish work-based learning opportunities to directly connect students with a mentorship or apprenticeship while they’re in school as a potential pathway after graduation.

  • Develop an implementation plan with the administration to weave practical skills into core curriculum, such as resume writing, interview preparation, budgeting a paycheck, and other life skills.

  • Ensure that these programs are widely advertised so students and parents know how to utilize them and effectively give feedback.
